History
Hydrastis canadensis comes from the two Greek words that mean signifying water and to accomplish. This name probably being given to the herb from the effects that is has on the mucous membranes.

Parts Used
 The root and rhizome are used from three- year old plants in autumn after the ripening of the seeds.

Cultivation
Goldenseal grows best in well-drained soil that is rich in humus. It needs a well shaded area, requiring 70 to 75% shade. It likes a leafy mulch covering.

Description
A small perennial herb, with a horizontal, irregularly knotted, bright yellow root-stock, from ¼ inch to ¾ inch thick, giving off slender roots below and marked scars of the flower-stems of previous years.
The flowering stem is pushed up in Spring, it is from 6 to 12 inches high and has downward pointing hairs, at the base there are short brown scales. It produces one solitary leaf on a long foot-stalk that is palmately cut into 5 or 7 lobes. Flowers in October and fruits become ripe in January.

Goldenseal – Hydrastis canadensis
Goldenseal is indicated for conditions such as congestive heart failure, haemorrhoids, diarrhoea, gastric and intestinal mucosa, gastroenteritis, heartburn, urinary tract infections, weak immunity, Candida, Chlamydia, sinusitis, pharyngitis and bronchitis. It is known to lower blood pressure and tachycardia. It is also known to reduce harmful infestations from parasites, E coli, Mycobacterium, shigella, staphylococcus and Pseudomonas.
The American aborigines use the root as a  stomach tonic and an application for sore eyes and general ulceration. It was also used as a yellow dye for their clothing and weapons.
